What is government-funded home care?

Government-funded home care allows older Australians to receive support in their own home rather than moving into residential care. The Australian Government subsidises the cost through the Support at Home program — you pay a smaller contribution, and the government covers the rest.

Services covered include personal care (showering, dressing), domestic assistance, nursing, allied health (physiotherapy, occupational therapy), home modifications, and equipment hire.

To access a package, you must be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). There is no cost for the assessment. Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to begin.

Common questions about home care

What is the Support at Home program?+
The Support at Home program replaced the previous Home Care Packages program in November 2025. It provides government-subsidised home care to older Australians through 8 funding levels, from $10,731/year (Level 1) to $78,106/year (Level 8). Source: Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care.
How do I get home care in Australia?+
Contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to begin. You will have a phone assessment followed by a home visit from an ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team). If approved, you are placed on the national queue and assigned a funding level. Once your package is ready, you choose a registered provider.
How much does home care cost?+
The government covers the majority of costs through your package subsidy. You may pay a basic daily fee (approximately $12.53/day in 2025-26 — Source: Services Australia, subject to change) and an income-tested care fee if you have income above the threshold. Provider management fees (typically 15-35% of your budget) also reduce the amount available for care.
How long does it take to get a home care package?+
Wait times vary depending on demand and your assessed level. Under the Support at Home program introduced in 2025, the government has aimed to reduce wait times. Contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 for current information on expected wait times in your area.
Can I choose any home care provider?+
Yes — once your package is assigned, you can choose any ACQSC-registered provider that operates in your area. You are not locked in and can switch providers at any time. WithSally helps you compare providers and find the right fit.
Is WithSally's service free?+
Yes — WithSally is always free for families. We are paid a referral fee by the provider once you sign a service agreement. We will always disclose how we are paid, and we never recommend providers based on fees rather than fit.
